**Please note that your child would benefit most from having some guidance from an adult or older friend/sibling that can help read the words while he/she is studying these words. Some children themselves are getting used to looking more closely at the syllables but other children may still need reminders and adult modeling to pay attention to:
1. the sounds in each syllable (the consonant and the vowel sound), 2. the beginning sound of the word (ie: “l” in the word “lit”) 3. and the beginning sound of each syllable in the word (ie: “b” and “n” in the word “banane” where it’s chunked into 3 syllables “ba” “na” “ne”) Please also remind your child that he/she is not aiming for perfection in practice or on the test but just learning the sounds (especially vowel sounds a , e , i , o , u , é) more easily and accurately every week. La dictée
I would like to check in to ask how studying the dictée words is coming along and I would like to offer some advice and clarification of our goals for these first few weeks of dictée. 1.The first couple of weeks were like an explanation and dry run of the dictée process (such as where to write on the page, how to listen for the next sound/word, how the teacher will repeat the word several times, and the pace at which the activity takes place). These words were chosen specifically because they are either powerful words or are authentic French vocabulary to incorporate the target sounds. This week we are focusing on the syllables la, le, li, lo, lu, lé, which are essentially the vowels that we already know with the L sound in front of it. As the dictée progresses your child will see that we can put a different consonant in front of each vowel to make new syllables. Over, time we build up our knowledge in this way and putting different syllables together to make words. 2. The dictée also serves as an opportunity to review reading and writing strategies from Kindergarten, such as listening for the beginning sound in a world, listening for the last prominent consonant sound in a word, dividing each word into syllables/chunks, stretching out a word to isolate each letter’s sound, and think of rhyming sounds. There are some specific activities to practice these different skills. Please let me know if you are interested in practicing them at home in addition to our work at school. 3. Practicing the colour words has been a great way to get used to some easy and reinforcing sight words for French Immersion students. We have been doing some colour-by-number activities in the past few weeks and we will continue throughout the year. The students can draw on their prior knowledge and experience to successfully know what the words mean, and at the same time, produce something beautiful out of it. 4. While doing this activity I will be able to assess the ways that some students may struggle, thereby needing extra attention, and where some students may excel, thereby needing a challenge. Please remind your child that each student learns differently and learns at a different pace. We expect that each student will try his/her very best work. We also expect that each student be brave, practice persistence when he/she makes mistakes because it is important to never give up. One of my favourite quotes is, “if you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not learning anything”. 5. I hope that studying for dictée will provide the opportunity for you to establish a homework routine at home that is no more than 5-10 minutes per day. Also, reading to and reading with your child each day should also take about 10 minutes in order to strengthen Language Arts skills, and should be conducted in a balanced manner between the two forms. Your child will be able to observe how letters, when put together in different combinations, make sounds, which form words, which carry meaning, which convey ideas, stories, concepts. 6. Please help your child establish reasonable and attainable goal this week of how many dictée words that they can concentrate on studying and will try to write correctly on Monday. This decision should be based on how their studying goes during the week and based on their ability. Goal setting and practicing towards goal attainment is a part of the Health and Career curriculum that the students will be working on more this year. Please let me know how it’s going and how I may be able to further assist you and your child. Please return the green Les devoirs duotang each day to school so that I can add any activities that may help solidify your child’s understanding of that day’s concepts or that week’s dictée words. Merci for all of your support and hard work at home! Mme Ahonen |
